Toddlers Can Learn From Wooden Doll Houses
My Mother in Law bought my little girl, Amelia one of the best wooden doll houses. It was a Playmobil one with no furniture and initially I thought it was too advanced for my 30 month old but decided to let her play with it anyhow. As I watched I realised that she was not too young for this and in fact it was one of the top learning toys for toddlers! Yep I knew there was so much I could teach her even without furniture inside! We could learn room names, contents of rooms, shapes, colors etc. Of course this meant my little girl was learning lots of new words as well as ideas!
Before you get started learning you need an excellent value wooden doll house
Some Ideas on How to Use Wooden Doll Houses as Best Toddler Learning Toys
- Help your toddler learn rooms of the house. I asked my little girl what rooms were in her house. I think she is advanced so she was able to tell me most rooms of the house. She did forget some things like utility room but she was able to tell me all the other rooms
- Ask your toddler what they would find in each of the rooms, i.e. what would you put in your kitchen. Here again Amelia was quick to respond with objects like cooker, microwave, table etc. I took her to our kitchen and pointed out more items she could put in her kitchen. You can tell this further and ask what would you use the cooker for etc. This is a great way to bond with your toddler as well as get their brain working. You can also ask other questions like what room would you sleep in etc. In due course I will attach a printable with lots more question ideas and prompts I feel are useful.
- Great opportunity to learn sizes, i.e. small rooms versus larger rooms, as well as shapes i.e. square room versus rectangular room. Of course how much you can learn depends on which of the wooden doll houses you choose.
- Colors can also be discussed in reference to room wall color or curtain color.
All in all wooden doll houses are one of the best toys that promote language development! The only problem now is that I am going to have to go out and buy all these extra items to put in her toy house 🙂
